Debbie Hepplewhite MBE FRSA

Debbie has been in the field of ‘Teaching’ for fifty years. From the primary classroom, she challenged
Tony Blair’s flagship ‘National Literacy Strategy’ (with others) as she pioneered research-informed
systematic synthetic phonics provision and teacher-training. She was awarded an MBE Queen’s
Award in 2012 in recognition of her ‘services to education’ having informed cross-party
parliamentary and independent inquiries into teaching children to read.
The internet enabled Debbie to provide and host informative websites in this field and also to create
substantial online FREE extensive phonics bodies of work catering for children aged 3+ to adults.
She subsequently designed further content as ‘hard copy’ to-buy resources for reading, spelling and
handwriting instruction. Debbie has authored three ‘DfE-validated’ systematic synthetic phonics
programmes. This hub site illustrates the scope of Debbie’s work (via Phonics International
